FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hobart – 12 March— The awards night for the 10 By 10 Short Script Challenge took place in Hobart last week as part of the Stranger With My Face Horror Film Festival.

The Challenge gives writers 10 days to compete a short horror script. The theme this year was a quote by iconic American author Shirley Jackson:

“Am I walking toward something I should be running away from?”

The Challenge attracted entries from Australia and around the world.

The scripts were assessed by a panel of judges: genre screenwriting team SP Krause and Shayne Armstrong; horror filmmaker Ursula Dabrowsky; and television writer Vicki Madden. For more info about the 2013 judges click here. There was also a reading group, for first round judging.

The winners were announced as a finale to the three-day horror festival, followed by drinks.

The award winners are:

Beyond the Grave Award for a professional writer from another field – a tie between Trapeze by Carrie McLean (TAS) /The Sewing Room by Scott McAteer (Victoria)

The Virgin Scream Award for person writing horror for the first time – Ryk Goddard for Oh Baby Baby (TAS)

The Miss Havisham Award for the script that portrays gender in an innovative and exciting way – One Way Runway by Gabrielle Lis (TAS)

The Deep Red Award for Best Script overall – a tie between Last Chapter of Our Story by Lucy Cruell (USA) and Vudu by Vince Baileyy (TAS)

Stranger With My Face congratulates everyone who entered and thanks the event’s numerous sponsors and supporters.

The Stranger With My Face Horror Film Festival focuses on female perspectives in the horror genre and highlights the work of women specifically, in an area of the film industry where they are greatly underrepresented behind the camera. It’s affiliated with an international movement, Women in Horror Month, and coincides with International Women’s Day on 8 March. The festival’s aims are about increasing the quality and entertainment value of mainstream cinema by encouraging diversity.
